Cambodia Outreach Australian Ear Care Program

Dr Eng Ooi recently returned from his 2nd trip to Battambang, Cambodia where he was part of a group of Australian ENT surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and audiologists who provide ear care to people in Cambodia who are poor and disadvantaged.

The group work together with local Cambodian health care workers seeing patients requiring medical care, perform operations, assessing their hearing and fitting them with hearing aids (donated from Australia).

The majority of cases performed were to repair ear drum perforations and remove cholesteatoma (chronic ear disease that can cause meningitis and brain abscesses). Over 100 patients were seen and 20 major ear operations were performed in a week.

Medical supplies and funds brought over for the trip were kindly donated by the members of the group, ASOHNS, and hospitals in Adelaide and Victoria.

Professor Carney visits the APY Lands for South Australia's first clinical ear health visit.

On Wednesday 9th May, Professor Carney visited the remote community of Mimili in the APY lands for the first clinical ear health visit to this remote indigenous community 1200km from Adelaide. The trip took 16 hours and involved 5 flights but was an outstanding success with several children being booked for surgery in Port Augusta later this month.

Children on the APY lands have a ear perforation rate of 37% - far higher than any other remote community in Australia. Southern ENT have been involved in the construction of ear health pathways to help these children get their ear disease treated and their hearing restored. "Can't hear - can't learn" is a commonly used phrase to emphasise the need for these children to be given every possible chance to succeed from an educational point of view. Hopefully we can continue to do our bit to support these initiatives.
